Automated Remote Sizing for Custom Medical PPE Apparel
Business Objective
A US medical PPE apparel manufacturer relied on field agents to visit customer facilities and manually measure hospital staff for custom-fitted garments. This made accurate sizing dependent on onsite access, creating a need for a remote process that could maintain fit precision at scale.
The Solution
OLSYS engineered a computer vision sizing application that replaces on-site tailoring visits with a smartphone scan, requiring no depth sensor, calibration target, or trained operator.
Staff wear a garment printed with fiducial markers of known geometry and fixed placement. This yields frame-to-frame correspondences across low-texture fabric and absolute metric scale, neither of which monocular video provides on its own.
SLAM recovers the camera trajectory, and multi-view reconstruction fuses the frames into a 3D body model in real-world units. Chest, waist and hip girths are extracted as geodesic paths at detected anatomical landmarks, matched against the size chart, and passed into manufacturing. The method is patent pending.
Results
- Accurate Remote Sizing
3D reconstruction replaced in-person fitting, holding accuracy within industry-regulated tolerance.
- Onsite Travel Eliminated
Sizing agent visits were removed entirely, at approximately $1,050 saved per visit.
- Onboarding Cut from 2 Weeks to 3 Days
A site is scanned and sized within 72 hours of request, with no travel to schedule. - Multi-State Reach
Clinics outside the agent network became viable to onboard, with annual re-measurement built in.
